National Congress Tutoring 4Success: Present and Emerging Futures of Tutoring in Higher Education
Organized under the UCP4SUCCESS initiative - a collaborative project of Universidade Católica Portuguesa dedicated to promoting academic success and preventing student dropout - the National Congress Tutoring 4Success: Present and Emerging Futures of Tutoring in Higher Education provides a space for reflection and dialogue on professor-led tutoring in higher education.
This Congress will bring together researchers, faculty members, institutional leaders, and other professionals interested in professor-led tutoring as an institutional strategy for promoting academic success and the holistic development of students.
In light of the growing diversity of student pathways and the demands of academic transitions, higher education institutions are called upon to strengthen their support structures. Professor-led tutoring has emerged as a key mechanism of guidance, articulation and mediation across academic, psychosocial, and institutional dimensions.
Within this framework, the Congress proposes to critically examine the place of professor-led tutoring in the higher education ecosystem, grounding discussion in scientific evidence, institutional experience and practice-based knowledge.
Structured as a conceptual and experiential journey throughout the day — Deconstruct, Construct, Integrate and Reconstruct — the Congress invites participants to question assumptions, analyse empirical data, articulate different levels of intervention and envision future directions for professor-led tutoring, aiming to develop more integrated, sustainable and student-centred models.
This Congress aims to:
- Deconstruct: Critically examine and deepen understanding of the impacts, limitations, and potential of professor-led tutoring models in higher education;
- Construct: Generate and systematise knowledge on tutoring models, approaches, and practices, draw on scientific evidence and institutional experience toidentify guiding principles for action.
- Integrate: Discuss how professor-led tutoring can be embedded within institutional ecosystems, considering the alignment of research, practice, and decision-making, as well as the organisational conditions required for sustainability.
- Reconstruct: Envision future pathways for tutor training, research, and the advancement of professor-led tutoring practices in higher education, oriented towards academic success, inclusion and students’ holistic development.
