Libraries and Other Resources
Católica has in all its campuses university libraries.
They all operate on a free-access basis, they provide fully computerised catalogues, accessible online, monographs and periodicals (on paper, many of them in electronic version) and other electronic resources.
In addition to the generic service of reading or consulting face-to-face or remote, they also offer several services:
- Home loan and interbank loan;
- Access to B-On, Institutional Repository and several databases;
- Access to the Internet, with the possibility of printing the results of the research carried out;
- Photocopying and printing services, self-service;
- Reading cabinets, for research and group work.
In Lisbon there is a central library, John Paul II University Library, which offers about 309,000 monographic titles (about 365,000 volumes) and about 7,950 digital documents (of which about 4,000 are theses and dissertations), areas of Theology, Law, Economics and Business Sciences, History and Literature and Social Sciences in general, as well as a section specialised in Health Sciences / Nursing and about 5,560 journal titles (of which about 1,600 live, and 80 in digital version) and 14 databases, in addition to those accessible through B-On).
The Library of the Regional Centre of Porto, present in the campus of Foz and the campus of Asprela, includes in its bibliographic collection about 90,000 monographs (books) and about 1375 scientific and academic journals, which are mainly distributed in the areas of Biotechnology, Health Sciences, Law, Economics and Management, Theology, Philosophy, Psychology, Education, Bioethics, Arts, Sound and Image, Music and Literature, among others. Within the framework of its Collection Management and Development Policy, the Library therefore favours electronic support. In this context, the Library already has some 25,000 e-books and 140,000 scientific and academic journals (e-journals), as a result of the subscription of various electronic resources and databases. In its bibliographic collection, the Library also adds the documentary collections of the European Documentation Centre, the philosopher Leonardo Coimbra, Maestro Manuel Ivo Cruz and Professor Manuel Braga da Cruz. It also has a special collection of all works by Guerra Junqueiro.
In the Regional Centre of Braga there are also two libraries: the D. Manuel Vieira de Matos Library - Faculty of Theology, with approximately 24,776 monographic titles; 842 magazine titles, of which 159 are alive; and the Library of the Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences, with about 150,000 monographic titles, about 3,000 titles of Magazines and active about 430 titles of magazines.
In the Regional Centre of Viseu, D. José Pedro da Silva university library, has approximately 35,100 monographic titles, 890 titles of magazines (of which 150 are alive). The European Documentation Centres, which provide documentation produced by the European Union, and access to the community databases, also operate in the Lisbon and Porto Regional Centres (Foz).
Online Knowledge Library (b-on) is a national database of international scientific journals, the result of a consortium promoted by UMIC and MCTES, and technically managed by the FCCN; provides journal titles, accessible online, in a simultaneous search regime, many of them (according to the policy of the various publishers) in full text and downloadable.
Studios, Research and Study Laboratories
For the courses in the areas of science and technology there are laboratories of study and research, particularly the School of Biotechnology (Porto) laboratories for the study of Engineering of Bioprocesses and Biopolymers, Control and Optimisation of Food Processes, Fundamental Microbiology and Applied, and Environmental Studies.
The students of the School of Arts, in Porto, have a set of equipment and facilities as means of support:
- Music listening club with attached music library;
- Pipe organs, carnations, pianos;
- Television studio;
- Control room for sound, image and lightening;
- Recording, editing and video post-production units;
- Assembly stations for locution, production and sound editing;
- Video and DVD viewing rooms.
Social Communication students benefit from the support of a radio studio, a multimedia room and a photo lab. In Viseu, the dentistry course inaugurated in late 2001 a fully equipped dental clinic allowing students to put into practice a new concept of interactive and flexible teaching called HEINET (Human Education Interactive NETwork), entirely based on Information and Communication Technologies.
In addition to computer support provided by IT Services, students have free-standing computer rooms.
UCP is integrated into a major national e-university project, E-U Virtual Campus, which has allowed the creation of online university services, the production and sharing of academic content, Internet access (and Intranet) outside and inside the university, anytime, anywhere.
The campuses are covered by a Wi-Fi network and students can access, with their laptop, the internet and online services in all places of the UCP.
There are, however, preferential places of work especially prepared for the use of the network. Those places are equipped with chairs, tables and electrical outlets, as well as printers.
