Católica participates in the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Europaeum Network

Isabel Capeloa Gil, President of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa (UCP), participated in the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Europaeum Network, of which UCP is a member, last October 1, at Balliol College, Oxford, United Kingdom. The President of the UCP moderated the session "Challenges to Academic Freedom" and participated in the plenary session "Key points from the Day". Nuno Sampaio, professor at the Institute for Political Studies (IEP), and the Network's Scholars Programme alumni, Ana Martins and Laura Lisboa, IEP alumni, and António Leitão Amaro, from the Católica Global School of Law, accompanied the President at the event, which took place from 30 September to 1 October.

The ceremony celebrated three decades of the European alliance of universities of excellence, which defines itself as a "university without walls", led by the University of Oxford. The celebration was attended by experts and professors from several European universities, including: Lord Patten of Barnes, Tracey Sowerby, Danny Srikandarajah, CEO of OXFAM, Hartmut Mayer, Executive Director of Europaeum, Andrew Serazin, Chair of the Templeton World Charity Foundation, Ngaire Woods, Founding Director of the Blavatnik School of Government and Sally Mapstone, Vice-Chancellor of the University of St Andrews.

Also present were Wim van den Doel, Leiden University, Jan Wouters, KU Leuven, James Manyika, All Souls College, Oxford, Sir Nigel Shadbolt, Principal of Jesus College, Oxford, Roxana Radu, Blavatnik School of Government, Andrew Graham, and Timothy Garton Ash, St Antony's College, Oxford. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, also spoke at the event.

Lord Chris Patten is Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Europaeum Network, which integrates José Manuel Barroso, Director of the Centre for European Studies at UCP and former President of the European Commission, Andrienne d'Arenberg, Andrew Graham, Margaret Jay, Baroness Jay of Paddington, Pascal Lamy, former Director-General of the WTO and former Member of the European Commission, Sally Mapstone, Laura Nordström, Marie-Laure Salles and Tomáš Zima.

The Europaeum Network which has now completed 30 years is composed of UCP, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Freie Universität Berlin, Universitá di Bologna, University of Copenhagen, Graduate Institute of International & Development Studies, Geneva, Helsingin Yliopisto, Uniwersytet Jagielloński, Universiteit Leiden, KU Leuven, University of Luxembourg, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, University of Oxford, Université Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne, Univerzita Karlova, Prague, University of St. Andrews and University of Tartu. Andrews and University of Tartu.

UCP officially became a member of the network in 2019, the result of a 10-year relationship with the IEP as an associate member. As already reported, at the invitation of the Chancellor of the University of Oxford and Chair of the Board of Trustees of Europaeum, Lord Chris Patten, the President of UCP will start her duties as Trustee of this network from January 2023.
