For documents issued abroad to be accepted as valid, they must be duly authenticated or legalised and, in most cases, translated into Portuguese. If the issuing country is a signatory to the Hague Convention, the document must be authenticated by means of an Apostille.

If the issuing country is not a signatory to the Hague Convention, the document will only be considered duly legalised if the signature has been certified by a Portuguese diplomatic or consular official and subsequently authenticated with the corresponding consular seal.

If the document was issued in a Member State of the European Union, no additional authentication or legalisation is required. However, it must be accompanied by the multilingual standard form available on Formulários de documentos públicos.

Documents issued in a foreign language must be accompanied by a certified translation into Portuguese, except in the following cases:

• Documents issued in English, French or Spanish;
• Documents issued by the authorities of a European Union Member State, provided that they are accompanied by a multilingual standard form.

To schedule an initial appointment with the Global Engagement Office, applicants must complete this form, which will provide access to the appointment calendar.

Appointments are held in person at either the Lisbon or Porto campus.

Yes. You may schedule an appointment with the Global Engagement Office at a campus other than the one you are based at.

To ensure that the process is completed as efficiently as possible, you must provide all the documents required for your residence permit application at your appointment with the Global Engagement Office. Only complete documentation that meets all the applicable requirements will be submitted to AIMA.

Yes. It is recommended that you schedule an appointment with the Global Engagement Office even if you already have an appointment scheduled with AIMA.

When completing the appointment form, please indicate the date of your appointment with AIMA.
