Useful Information

Visa and Residence Permit

Students who live outside the European Union need to obtain a residency visa from a Portuguese Consulate/ Embassy for studying in Portugal. The visa request needs processing prior to departure. You cannot enter Portugal as a tourist and only afterwards request your residency visa.

Consult the Portuguese Communities website to:

- locate your nearest Consulate/Embassy of Portugal;

- receive information on the most appropriate types of visa to your case and the procedures involved in applying.

Depending on your nationality, duration of your stay and the type of service you are applying for, some or all of the following standard documents may be required:
- Passport valid for 3 months after your date of return and with at least one blank visa
- Completed SEF application form
- Two color passport-size photographs
- Copy of itinerary with confirmed reservation or Acceptance Letter issued by your Faculty
- Proof of departure arrangements
- Proof of sufficient means of support
- Proof of health insurance coverage
- Portuguese Criminal Record
- Address Confirmation
- Proof that you have no debts at Universidade Católica Portuguesa

Accommodation

It is advisable to begin searching for accommodation prior to arriving in Portugal. Options include one of the following accommodation types: university residence; rented room or shared house.

Universidade Católica Portuguesa (UCP) does provide support services for candidates seeking accommodation.

Students may also, depending on availability, access the UCP accommodation service through RUF – the Female University Residence in Lisbon and the mixed Catholic University Residence in Braga.

Health Insurance

European students should request the European Health Insurance Card in their country of origin.

Students from outside the European Union should take out a healthcare insurance policy valid for Portugal.

In virtue of the specific agreement signed between Portugal and Brazil covering social security, students of Brazilian nationality are eligible to benefit from healthcare protection in Portugal. To this end, prior to departing from Brazil, students are to request the certificate of the right to medical assistance (BR/PT 13, formerly designated PB-4). The BR/PT 13 form may be filed at any healthcare service or delegation in your city of residence.

The private insurance or the BR/PT 13 form are required to access the medical-hospital services, whether on a regular or emergency basis, in healthcare centres and public hospitals in Portugal.
