Open Class with Denilson Baniwa | School of Arts

As part of the exhibition "Não foi Cabral: revendo silêncios e omissões", the School of Arts of Universidade Católica Portuguesa is organising an Open Class with Denilson Baniwa on 22 February at 18:30.

The exhibition will run from 16 February to 24 May and is curated by Lilia Schwarcz and Nuno Crespo.

The annual programme of conferences, concerts, exhibitions and performances returns to the School of Arts in spring 2024. Each year, this programme is aligned around an emerging theme in our contemporary world. If, in previous years, our attention has been focused on how it is possible to learn to "tread softly on the earth" (Ailton Krenak), on the relationship between "Art / Thought / Sound" or on exploring the multiplicity of intersections and contaminations between "Art and Science", in 2024 it will be reflection on the omissions and silences that histories maintain that will take centre stage.

Denilson Baniwa

Nascido em Barcelos, no interior do Amazonas, Denilson Baniwa é indígena do povo Baniwa. Atualmente, vive e trabalha em Niterói, no Rio de Janeiro. Como ativista pelo direito dos povos indígenas, realiza, desde 2015, palestras, oficinas e cursos, atuando sobretudo nas regiões sul e sudeste do Brasil e, também, na Bahia. Em 2018, realizou a mostra “Terra Brasilis: o agro não é pop!”, na Galeria de Arte da Universidade Federal Fluminense, também em Niterói, como parte do projeto “Brasil: A Margem”, promovido pela universidade. No mesmo ano, participou da residência artística da quarta edição do Festival Corpus Urbis, realizada no Oiapoque, no Amapá. Esteve em exposições no CCBB, Pinacoteca de São Paulo, CCSP, Centro de Artes Helio Oiticica, Museu Afro Brasil, MASP, MAR e Bienal de Sidney. Além de artista visual, Denilson é também publicitário, articulador de cultura digital e hackeamento, contribuindo na construção de uma imagética indígena em diversos meios como revistas, filmes e séries de tv. Em 2019, venceu o Prêmio Pipa na categoria online e, em 2021, foi um dos vencedores indicados pelo júri.
