Masterclass with Ira Sachs
FREE ENTRY
In the context of Frankie’s national premiere, a film shot in Portugal and which was present at the last Cannes Film Festival, Escola das Artes (EA) welcomes Ira Sachs, one of the most outstanding American filmmakers today. The filmmaker will lead a masterclass in which it will be discussed his filmmaking processes – both in terms of writing and directing –, as well as commenting on some of his works, such as Little Men or Keep the Lights On, exhibiting some excerpts.
Ira Sachs’ presence at EA is made in partnership with O Som e a Fúria, producer of Frankie, and Midas Filmes, distributor of this title in Portugal.
On December 4th, and in articulation with this masterclass, the Cineclube EA will screen the movie Little Men.
This masterclass is also part of EA’s effort to provide students with a multitude of contacts with relevant figures in their areas of interest, aiming for their work to fit into the contemporary cultural and creative universe and not only the academic world.

Ira Sachs (Memphis, 1965) has stood out as a skilled melodrama builder, where intimacy and authenticity serve as a vehicle for a broader view of some of the great issues of our time such as homosexual marriage, drugs, or the gentrification phenomena. Among his filmography, feature films such as Little Men, Love is Strange, Keep the Lights On or Forty Shades of Blue stand out, the latter awarded the Sundance Festival Jury Grand Prix in 2005. His short film Last Address, which pays tribute to a collection of New York AIDS victims, is featured in the Whitney Museum and MoMA collections. He is also a founder and CEO of Queer/Art, a non-profit organization that supports LGBT artists in the various artistic fields.
