Sala EBI009| UCP | Campus do Porto

The next Biotalk “Microbial Biocatalysts for the Transformation of Recalcitrant Pollutants: From Pathways to Biotechnological Applications” will have Irina Moreira as the guest speaker. The session will be held on May 8 starting at 14:00.

Microbial Biocatalysts for the Transformation of Recalcitrant Pollutants: From Pathways to Biotechnological Applications

Microorganisms are recognized as effective biocatalysts for the transformation of recalcitrant pollutants. This talk explores (i) degradation of PET intermediates by mangrove microbiomes; (ii) aerobic defluorination of PFAS, including PFOS, by Labrys portucalensis F11, with identification of chain‑shortened and defluorinated metabolites; (iii) complete biotransformation and detoxification of neonicotinoids and endocrine disruptors; and (iv) enhanced pollutant removal through targeted bioaugmentation. Together, these findings advance mechanistic understanding of pollutant biotransformation and support the development of microbially driven remediation strategies.
