The production of original knowledge and interdisciplinarity form the structural vectors of doctoral education at the Universidade Católica Portuguesa.

Through its Doctoral School, the Católica Doctoral School (CADOS), the University:

  • ensures an appropriate and responsible guidance for doctoral students;
  • creates opportunities for the development of students’ degrees in an international environment;
  • facilitates the professional development and integration of future graduates within the competitive market of knowledge by offering transversal courses of soft skills adjusted to this reality.

Católica guarantees doctoral students a path with a differentiating and high-quality brand with its more than 20 doctoral courses accredited by A3ES spread over 12 academic units and a total of around 700 doctoral students. Each course has its own strategy in close articulation with activities developed by the 15 UCP research centres.

Católica Medical School is the most recent academic unit of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa, created in 2018. It will contribute to the innovation of medicine in Portugal, through three basic pillars: teaching, research and clinical. Católica Medical School aims to train professionals of excellence, with a high ethical sense and social responsibility, capable of contributing to the continuous improvement of health care, inspired by the mission of working for the common good.

The Faculty of Biotechnology was founded in 1984, more than 30 years ago. At ESB, a variety of university activities are carried out, with emphasis on Higher Education (Undergraduate, Master's, PhD and Postgraduate), Research and Development (fundamental and applied projects) and Extension to the secondary and tertiary sectors (provision of services, and continuing training).

The Faculty of Education and Psychology of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa (FEP-UCP) offers its students a quality education in the fields of Education and Psychology. The educational offer in Education includes several post-graduate courses, a master's degree and a PhD program (at the Porto Regional Centre and the Catholic University of Mozambique).

In 2023, the Faculty of Health Sciences and Nursing was created as the successor unit to the ICS.

With extensive educational experience, we teach courses that set a benchmark in Portugal for the scientific, technical and human preparation of students, through an innovative programme for obtaining the professional title of Nurse and/or Specialist Nurse.

The Faculty of Human Sciences is organized in five scientific areas - Communication Sciences, Culture Studies, Philosophy, Social Sciences and Psychology - offering a total of 6 degrees, 10 master's degrees (with a total of 16 variants or annual specializations) and 7 PhDs. Moreover there is a Graduate School and an Advanced Training (EPGFA), with a dozen courses of variable format and length, 2 institutes and 3 Study Centers.

The reputation of the Faculty of Law (Porto School) speaks for itself. It was the first law course north of Coimbra. Over the course of 40 years, it has been building its own body of teachers, trained in Portugal and in prestigious European and North American universities. In the Faculty of Law, it is seen as a fundamental objective to help each student carry out their professional projects and even some of their dreams.

In January 2015 was created the Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences as a result of the fusion of two faculties of the Braga Regional Centre of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa (Faculty of Philosophy and Faculty of Social Sciences). Currently this faculty offers 7 undergraduate degrees, 9 master's degrees and 3 doctoral degree.

The Faculty of Theology has the mission to cultivate and promote, through scientific research and higher teaching, theological and related sciences; to study Catholic doctrine, haurida of Divine Revelation, and to expose it orderly, seeking, in the light of the same Revelation, solutions to human problems.

The Institute for Political Studies intends to be a strategic project of long reach and long duration. In an era in when knowledge tends to be the key to development, this Institute naturally assumes itself as a project for the future which seeks to be useful to Portugal and to the Portuguese-speaking world.

The School of Arts in Porto is directed to all those who are interested in the ancient and contemporary artistic and cultural heritage, in a diversified theoretical and practical education, and who are curious and have an open mind to research and fondness for problem solving.
