UCP Editora marks the 50th anniversary of the Constitution with the launch of a new book by Jorge Miranda

UCP Editora has published the work “Democracia e Constituição”, authored by the constitutional scholar and professor at the Universidade Católica Portuguesa, Jorge Miranda, as part of the celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic. Find out more here.

Approved on 2 April 1976, the Constitution marked a decisive moment in the consolidation of democracy in Portugal. Half a century later, Jorge Miranda brings us a new book that sets out to explore democracy, political systems, rights and forms of government.

In a constantly changing world, the book emphasises the importance of understanding democracy as a central pillar of political organisation, based on universal, personal and direct suffrage for the election of those holding positions of power.

The work is structured in four chapters: the first chapter addresses democracy in the context of forms of government. The second explores the concept of democracy in general terms, analysing its foundations and evolution. The third chapter presents the principles underpinning Portuguese democracy. Finally, the fourth chapter is devoted to citizens’ rights, highlighting their importance in the functioning of a democratic state.

With this launch, UCP Editora joins in the celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the Constitution, encouraging reflection on the workings of democracy and its impact on contemporary society.
