Superior General of the Society of Jesus visits the University

The Aula Magna of the Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences (FFCS) of Universidade Católica Portuguesa (UCP) opened its doors for Father Arturo Sosa, Superior General of the Society of Jesus, to deliver a lecture on the mission of Jesuit universities and the respective challenges they face, on December 6.

The voices of the Academic Choir of the UCP marked the beginning of the session, which was attended by the Pro-Rector of the Braga Regional Center, João Duque, the Director of the FFCS, Fr. José Lopes and the Archbishop of Braga, D. José Cordeiro, as well as students, faculty and staff.

Throughout his speech, he stressed the importance of knowing how to apply discernment, both in an academic environment and in the course of life. "Colleges are used to having the reins in their hands to control the speed of the road. But discernment is this tremendous effort to loosen the reins," concluding that for this to be possible, it is necessary to change the focus of action and the methods of decision-making.

According to the Superior General and in accordance with Ignatian pedagogy, the teacher must be, above all, "a wise person. Not wisdom acquired through experiences, book readings and/or much study, but "a person who knows how to love and is able to transmit this love".

To close this moment, the Líricas - Tuna Feminina da UCP - Braga performed for all those present.
