School of Arts inaugurates the exhibition "Dança do Labirinto" by Ricardo Jacinto
Ricardo Jacinto, a sound artist and musician focused primarily on the relationship between sound and space, will present an exhibition at the School of Arts of Universidade Católica Portuguesa, titled "Dança do Labirinto." The opening is scheduled for October 24 at 7:00 PM, where he will also present his second solo album for cello, electronics, audio feedback, and resonant objects.
"Dança do Labirinto" is a project where the ancient figure of the labyrinth serves as a guiding force for the interaction of many bodies, ghosts, and times within it. It is an installation composed of many musical elements, or perhaps, a dance for infinite noise. In this exhibition, the artist creates an immersive sensory experience where physical space and sound act as structural elements for movement. The central idea is the creation of a physical and sound-based "labyrinth" that guides participants/visitors through a space with various auditory and visual stimuli. It promotes unconventional interactions between body, space, and sound, proposing an experience that goes beyond the visual, directly involving the participants' bodily and auditory perception.
Ricardo Jacinto explores the concept of "invisible choreography," where music and sound shape the movements of bodies in space, without these bodies being necessarily visible or tangible.
“For us, it is a source of pride to feature the distinctive work of the artist and musician Ricardo Jacinto. Dança do Labirinto creates a kind of sensory game, where visitors move through environments that are not only physically designed but also acoustically,” says Nuno Crespo, director of the School of Arts at Universidade Católica Portuguesa in Porto.
Ricardo Jacinto is a founding member and artistic director of the OSSO collective and conducted his doctoral research at the Sonic Arts Research Centre, Queens University Belfast. Since 1998, he has presented his work in solo and group exhibitions, concerts, and performances across Portugal and Europe, frequently collaborating with other artists, musicians, architects, and performers. His music has been released by labels like Clean Feed, Shhpuma Records, and Creative Sources, and his installations are part of various national collections such as Fundação de Serralves and Caixa Geral de Depósitos.
