Porto Regional Centre joins the Porto Climate Pact

Promoted by the Porto City Council (CMP), the Porto Climate Pact, conceived with the aim of defending the global climate system, has the Porto Regional Centre as a signatory.

This pact seeks to promote the importance of collective action around the stability of the global climate system, which is at risk due to the high concentration of Greenhouse Gases (GHG) in the atmosphere. An alleviation of these emissions is urgently needed to avoid unforeseen consequences at the level of natural, economic and social systems.

The municipality considers that the path towards carbon neutrality in Porto “is demanding and calls for collective action for collective benefits” and that “it can only be achieved with concrete actions carried out by all actors.”

The adhesion of Católica to this pact reflects the commitment assumed with the promotion of sustainable development and with the protection of Casa Comum. Isabel Braga da Cruz, Pró-Rector of UCP says that “sustainability is at the heart of Católica’s strategic objectives” and that it is with “conviction and commitment that the university adheres to this pact for the climate, in the certainty that it will be a part important in this path of sustainability in the City of Porto. We are strongly committed to the purposes of the Porto Climate Pact. We want to bring scientific and management value to our partners, to our city.”

Through association with this pact, Católica assumes responsibility for establishing and sharing concrete goals and actions; involve networks of actors in the process of reducing GHG emissions from the Port; collaborating with local and national government to define an enabling context for decarbonisation; monitor and communicate the program and the impacts of measures implemented to reduce GHG emissions; publicize the progress achieved in achieving the goals and actions developed.

The official adhesion ceremony to the Porto Climate Pact took place on September 16, at Casa do Roseiral, in the gardens of Palácio de Cristal. The event was attended by Rui Moreira, president of the CMP, Duarte Cordeiro, Minister of the Environment and Climate Action, and many companies and institutions in the region that joined the pact. Porto Regional Centre da UCP, as a subscriber, was represented by João Pinto, vice president of the institution.
