"PEREGRINATION BY THE CHURCHES OF LISBON" - An unpublished work by José da Felicidade Alves

The unpublished work of José da Felicidade Alves, Pilgrimage through the Churches of Lisbon, begins to be published in various volumes, in e-book format, on the Portal of Religious History of Universidade Católica Portuguesa, from 14 December, the 22nd anniversary of his death.

The inventory of the estate of José da Felicidade Alves led to the identification of a set of manuscript volumes entitled Pilgrimage through the Churches of Lisbon. Professor José Mattoso personally contacted some researchers to prepare a critical analysis of the manuscript, and it was decided to publish it.

The proposal for the publication of this work was presented by the coordinators of the publication, João Salvado Ribeiro and Abílio Tavares Cardoso, to the National Centre of Culture which, together with the Centre for the Study of Religious History of the Portuguese Catholic University, its partner in this venture, developed a website where information about this editorial initiative and its dissemination is centralised. The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation supports this project.

In an initial phase, access to the first three volumes of the work, which cover the following periods, is available:

  • TOME I - Temples prior to the conquest of Lisbon from the Moors (1147)
  • TOME II - The Medieval Churches (1147-1495)
  • TOME III - The Churches of the 16th Century (1495 -1580)

All information is available here.
