Nursing Seminars bring students closer to the profession’s diverse career paths

Between 15 and 17 June, the School of Nursing (Porto) at Universidade Católica Portuguesa hosted the 4th Nursing Seminar Series, bringing together students and healthcare professionals under the theme "Career Paths and Professional Choices."

Over the course of three days, 15 seminars explored a wide range of nursing specialties, offering students a comprehensive overview of the profession’s diverse career opportunities. Participants gained first-hand insight into the experiences, challenges and opportunities associated with areas such as critical care, chronic disease management, palliative care, maternal and obstetric health, child and paediatric health, geriatrics and gerontology, community and public health, family health, prison nursing, rehabilitation, sports nursing, occupational health, research, as well as the role of the profession’s representative bodies.

Primarily aimed at final-year undergraduate nursing students, the initiative sought to support informed career decision-making by providing direct contact with nurses working across different fields of practice. In addition to sharing professional experiences, the seminars encouraged reflection on the current challenges facing the profession and the skills required to meet society’s evolving healthcare needs

As in previous editions, students also played an active role in organising and promoting the event, strengthening their communication, teamwork and leadership skills while actively contributing to university life. This hands-on experience complements their scientific and professional education.

Through this initiative, the School of Nursing reaffirms its commitment to delivering an education that is closely connected to professional practice and dedicated to preparing nurses equipped to meet the challenges of an ever-evolving profession.
