Note of grief for the death of Admiral Vieira Matias

UCP joins the Vieira Matias family in mourning of the death of Admiral Nuno Gonçalo Vieira Matias and thanks him for his service to the Universidade Católica Portuguesa, where he taught in the Institute of Political Studies an area of studies in Security and Defense.

"Years later, I had the privilege of inviting Admiral Vieira Matias to teach at the Institute of Political Studies of the Catholic University. It was a reunion with fantastic consequences. Admiral Vieira Matias developed from then on an area of studies in Security and Defense, attracting the teaching at the IEP top military of the three branches of the Armed Forces. With Professor Adriano Moreira, both resumed the tradition of Advanced Programs in Studies of the Sea, initially inaugurated also at Universidade Católica, by our dear Friend and Master Ernâni Lopes, then early deceased. With them, and under their leadership, the IEP-UCP consolidated and expanded its maritime vocation. When we created, with Mário Pino and Manuel Braga da Cruz, the common room D. Henrique the Navigator, Admiral Vieira Matias offered us a beautiful reproduction, with the seal of the Navy Academy, of Jorge de
Aguiar, from 1492 - the oldest map with date and signature of the Portuguese Discoveries, of which the original is at Yale University. On the same occasion, Professor Adriano Moreira offered us a beautiful replica of the portrait of the Infante in the famous São Vicente Panels," stresses Prof. João Carlos Espada, Director of the Institute of Political Studies, in his speech of homage to Admiral Vieira Matias.

A remarkable militant, researcher and academic, Admiral Vieira Matias was Chief of Staff of the Navy between 1997 and 2002. He died on June 13, 2020.
