Julião Sarmento honoured by the Escola das Artes

Around 600 people attended the event in honour of Julião Sarmento, organised by the Escola das Artes of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa, which was marked by the launch of the book "Julião Sarmento - The Complete Film Works", at Lux Frágil in Lisbon, in partnership with Sistema Solar - Documenta and the Julião Sarmento Association.

On Julião Sarmento's birthday, November 4, the Lux Frágil was transformed into a very special exhibition hall to receive, for one night, Julião Sarmento's works in moving image. Nuno Crespo, Dean of the Escola das Artes of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa, in his speech presenting the book recalled that "the way Julião Sarmento always wanted to try new things, meet new artists, develop new projects. He always had some unexpected idea to tell and in which he wanted to involve us."

About the homage event, Nuno Crespo "appreciates the very generous and enthusiastic way in which so many friends, artists, curators, critics and collectors came together to celebrate the work of one of the most singular and remarkable artists in the history of Portuguese art."

The new book dedicated to Julião Sarmento, edited by Nuno Crespo and designed by Pedro Falcão, brings together all 51 works in moving image that Julião Sarmento produced during his career and is published by the Centro de Investigação em Ciência e Tecnologia das Artes (CITAR) of the Escola das Artes of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa and Documenta - Sistema Solar, containing previously unpublished texts by Delfim Sardo, director of the CCB responsible for programming, Kerry Brougher, founding director of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles, and Chrissie Iles, curator of the Whitney Museum of American Art, in New York. The book also includes a photographic portfolio by Carlos Lobo and an interview by Nuno Crespo and João Pedro Amorim with the artist about his work in moving image.

This book results from a collaboration with Julião Sarmento that began in 2017 with the exhibition "Julião Sarmento. Film Works.
