João Paulo II University Library hosts “Bomb Shadows: Hiroshima-Nagasaki” exhibition

The João Paulo II University Library (BUJPII) invites the entire community to visit the exhibition Bomb Shadows: Hiroshima-Nagasaki, a thematic and illustrated show that will be open from June 11 to September 12.

In the year marking the 80th anniversary of the dropping of the atomic bomb (August 1945), and in partnership with the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, this exhibition aims to promote knowledge of the facts and impacts of the atomic bomb, raising awareness of the need for a culture of peace.

Bomb Shadows: Hiroshima-Nagasaki” is made up of two sections. The first, entitled Hiroshima-Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Photo Poster Set, consists of a set of 30 posters depicting the damage caused by the atomic bombings. The second section, called A-bomb Drawings by Survivors, brings together a collection of drawings representing the authors' own experiences during the nuclear attack. These drawings and paintings, mostly collected in 1974, 1975, and 2002, are authentic records of the citizens of Hiroshima and are precious testimonies to the devastation left by nuclear weapons.

On June 11, the date of the exhibition's opening, a paper crane workshop will be held at BUJPII from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm. This activity invites the public to participate in the creation of origami that symbolizes hope and peace.

This tradition of paper cranes (paper tsurus) is linked to hope and peace, especially since the Second World War. After the atomic bomb in Hiroshima, it became a symbol of resistance and the desire for a world without nuclear weapons, inspired by the story of Sadako Sasaki, a girl who tried to make a thousand tsurus to regain her health and promote peace. This workshop aims to contribute to the construction of a thousand tsurus that will be displayed at BUJPII throughout the exhibition, as a collective expression of participation and reflection.

The contents of this exhibition, originally produced in Japan and translated into English, are presented unchanged, according to the version received.
