Gulbenkian opens new scholarships for young talent

Aimed at supporting talent and encouraging young students to take their first steps in research, the Gulbenkian New Talent Scholarship programme is aimed at Bachelor's or Master's degree students in the areas of science: biology, geology, physics, mathematics and chemistry, as well as in any area of the humanities, arts and social sciences.

Part of a comprehensive project aimed at academic and scientific development, the scholarships, which are open for applications between 1 and 30 September 2025, include an immersive talent enrichment programme, with weekend scientific retreats, mentoring with university professors of recognised merit and monitoring by a Scientific Committee.

To apply, students must be enrolled in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of a bachelor's or integrated master's degree programme, or in the 1st year of a master's degree programme, in the 2025/2026 academic year, and have an average score of 16.5 or higher at the time of application.

Divided into three components, the scholarship consists of support worth €1,000 for further studies and research, and may also include support of up to €1,500 for talent enrichment activities, such as conferences, courses or internships, to be validated by the Scientific Committee; and additional social support of €1,000 for candidates with an annual per capita household income of up to €12,000, upon proof of application for a social action scholarship from the Directorate-General for Higher Education.

In all, nine young talents from the Universidade Católica Portuguesa have already been honoured with this scholarship. In 2024, Chak Wa Kong, from the Faculty of Law, Emma Cotignola Varone, from the Institute of Political Studies, and Rita Vieira, from the Faculty of Human Sciences, joined the list, recognised for their academic excellence.
