Escola das Artes’ project aims to include and educate through film literacy

Educate and include, through the promotion of an artistic language around Cinema, is the goal of the INSERT project of the Research Centre for Science and Technology of the Arts (CITAR) of the Escola das Artes. It will be developed over 18 months between 2022 and 2023 and will also involve researchers from the Research Centre for Human Development (CEDH) of the Faculdade de Educação e Psicologia and with the Directorate General of Education as a partner.

Coordinated by Pedro Alves, faculty member of Escola das Artes and researcher at CITAR, the project aims to design, implement, test and disseminate a theoretical and practical methodology of film literacy and film production that can combat the geographical, cultural or economic barriers that so many regions still face today.

Through the INSERT project, a set of resources will be developed to guide teachers and students in contacting and experimenting with the seventh art, duly contextualized, presented and accompanied by the research team. The methodology will be tested in five schools in the North of the country and then disseminated on a global scale, both nationally and internationally.

Decrease social inequalities through the promotion of film literacy

Pedro Alves explains that the importance of this initiative for the educational community lies in the possibility of "reducing inequalities in access to different teaching and learning opportunities and strategies". Through INSERT, a "project perfectly integrated and based on current national and international film literacy and pedagogy strategies", we will seek to "give more schools, teachers and students the opportunity to have contact with cinema".

The project responds to the contemporary need for flexibility and inclusion in schools, promoting an artistic language and a strategy for learning and action that will bring together all stakeholders in the school community.

A tool for everyone

What can one expect from the INSERT project? Pedro Alves says that within 18 months it is hoped "to have properly tested and refined a methodology of cinematic learning and experimentation that makes sense to disseminate in a broad and open sense.

By 2023, it is envisioned that INSERT can "be an open access, scientifically sound and pedagogically rich online tool that can be used in different contexts, by different stakeholders, with different goals and approaches."

Carried out by the Research Centre for Science and Technology of the Arts (CITAR) of the Escola das Artes of the Porto Regional Centre, the research project INSERT is funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).
