EA Teacher Selected for Artist Residency in the USA

The Luso American Development Foundation (FLAD) has announced the grantees nominated for the 2023 Artist Residencies in the United States of America. Among the selected artists is João Pimenta Gomes, professor at the School of Arts.

João Pimenta Gomes is a visual artist and musician, graduated in sound and music production - he is also a guest lecturer at EA - and addresses in his works references linked to music and explores the relationships between space and the body through the manipulation of modular synthesizers, images and objects, providing encounters between the analogical and the digital, the sensorial and the conceptual.

As part of his application for a FLAD grant, Gomes' residency in the US will take place at the Experimental Intermedia Foundation New York. The FLAD Grants for Artistic Residencies in the United States aim to support the development and training of artists of Portuguese nationality or who have lived in Portugal for more than five years.

Speaking of his expectations for the residency, the EA professor said, "It will give me the opportunity to come into contact for the first time with the rare Buchla synthesizer and its sound architecture, fundamentally in terms of the modular synthesizers I use in my work. The FLAD grant opens doors to this imaginary and allows the still young work to be developed with unparalleled freedom.

On May 18th, the cycle "Pisar suavemente sobre a terra" will feature a Dashed Concert by Matéria Simples, a project founded by João Pimenta Gomes, with Pedro Tropa and Teresa Santos - admission free + info
