Católica Law Alumnus Founds Startup and Secures £1.25 Million in Funding

Pedro Sousa, an alumnus of the Porto Faculty of Law of Universidade Católica Portuguesa, is a co-founder of Karavel.ai, a technology startup focused on Artificial Intelligence, which has just raised £1.25 million in investment from Fuel Ventures.

Karavel.ai emerged from Pedro Sousa’s experience in international fintech companies. After more than a decade working in Compliance, holding leadership roles at Revolut and ClearScore, he identified limitations in processes such as marketing content review and the monitoring of new legislation. To address these challenges, Pedro Sousa and his co-founder, Nav Garcha, founded Karavel.ai in 2025. The platform aims to automate demanding tasks such as content review, horizon scanning and regulatory gap analysis.

Pedro Sousa began his career at a small law firm in Porto, where he quickly realised that traditional legal practice was not the path he wished to follow. He later moved to London to pursue a master’s degree in Law and Technology, and it was at Revolut that he began his career in Compliance:“It was one of the most defining experiences of my professional life, and I could fill volumes with stories about Revolut. It was there that my interest in Compliance emerged and where my journey in this field truly began.”

Pedro Sousa leaves a message for Law graduates who do not see themselves following conventional career paths: “A Law degree also opens other doors when combined with niche interests.” He adds that “the immense opportunity that AI presents in this field is what motivates me the most.” Convinced that studying Law at Universidade Católica Portuguesa would offer the strongest foundation for his career, he concludes: “Today, I am certain that I made the right decision.”
