Católica launches Chair dedicated to the "Economy of Francis"

The "Economy of Francis and Clare" is the most recent Chair of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa, announced by the President, Isabel Capeloa Gil, during Pope Francis' visit to Católica on 3 August, as part of World Youth Day 2023.

In honour of the Holy Father, the President explains how the project aims to "host transversal initiatives in all areas of knowledge at UCP, aimed at promoting the principles of Francis' Economy and developing a social model that dignifies people and the environment".

An initiative that His Holiness praised during his speech, emphasising Clara's inclusion, and stressing how "the contribution of women is indispensable. In fact, in the Bible, we see how the economy of the family is largely in the hands of women."

For Pope Francis, the woman is "the true 'ruler' of the household, whose goal is not exclusively profit, but care, coexistence, the physical and spiritual well-being of all, and also the ability to share with the poor and the stranger."

As such, His Holiness believes that it is "exciting to undertake economic studies from this perspective, with the intention of restoring to the economy the dignity it deserves, so that it does not remain in the hands of the wild market and speculation".
