Católica integrates the coordination of COTEC's research on Circular and Digital Bioeconomy

In collaboration with the Universidade Católica Portuguesa, COTEC conducted the report "Circular and Digital Bioeconomy - Opportunities for the Transition and Sustainable Development of the Portuguese Economy and Industry", a project under the Pi4.0 Platform supported by the COMPETE programme.

Manuela Pintado, director of the associate laboratory CBQF and professor at the Escola Superior de Biotecnologia, and Alexandra Leitão, from Católica Porto Business School, coordinated the report, which also had the collaboration of Francisco Rebelo, guest assistant at Católica Porto Business School, and Tânia Ribeiro, PhD student at the Escola Superior de Biotecnologia.

The report indicates that Portugal has evolved positively and that it has the potential to grow at a greater rate, so as to converge with the European average and meet the major objectives set for the transition to a low-carbon economy and renewable resources. In terms of new biomaterials and bioproducts, the potential of forest resources for the implementation of the circular bioeconomy and competitiveness in key sectors such as Construction, Textile and Plastics is highlighted, since Portugal is one of the countries in Europe with the highest percentage of forest territory. Greater use of low-energy materials such as wood and cork, as well as better environmental performance in buildings are necessary for greater sustainability in Construction.
