Católica appoints new Ethics Committee: Technology, Social Sciences and Humanities

The President of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa, Isabel Capeloa Gil, appointed the new "Ethics Committee: Technology, Social Sciences and Humanities" (CETCH), for the biennium 2022-2023, through a rectorial dispatch. Professors Celia Manaia and William Hasselberger were elected to the positions of President and Vice-President of the Commission, respectively, during the first meeting of the CETCH.

The creation of the CETCH aims at strengthening the ethical conduct in scientific research in its fields of action, at the Universidade Católica Portuguesa: "In accordance with the principles of the Ethics and Conduct Code of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa and in response to the recurring requests presented by the Research Centres and the PhD Programmes of UCP, I hereby appoint, for the biennium 2022-2023, the "Ethics Committee: Technology, Social Sciences and Humanities" (CETCH)".

The areas of Technology, Social Sciences and Humanities are represented by the personalities of the Portuguese society that integrate the CETCH in 2022-2023, among which André da Costa Jorge, President of the Jesuit Refugee Service; Célia Manaia, ESB-UCP; Célia Ribeiro, IGOS-UCP; Francisco Roumier Ribeirinho, Catholic Leaders Academy; Isabel Baptista, FEP-UCP; Joana Silva, FCEE-UCP; Jorge Pereira da Silva, FD-UCP; Pedro McDade, sj, FFCS-UCP; Peter Hanenberg, Vice-Rector of UCP; Rita Francisco, FCH-UCP; Rita Isabel Valadas, President of Caritas Portuguesa; Vítor Coutinho, Theologian; William Hasselberger, IEP-UCP.

The Commission's opinions are intended to strengthen the application of values, fundamental ethical principles, standards and good practice guidelines, as well as current legislation, in all fields applicable to research. Through the nomination document, Isabel Capeloa Gil defines:

"The appraisal procedure focuses on ethical norms and standards, applicable legislation, national and international conventions and declarations, national authorisations and ethical approvals, proportionality of methods and proponents' awareness regarding the observance of high ethical standards, as well as the imperative to protect and guarantee the dignity and integrity of all involved, at the different stages of the research process."

The CETCH meets monthly to consider the requests for opinions submitted by the end of the previous month, and has the technical support of the Office of Research and Innovation (GII).
