Book presentation "Liberdade de Imprensa em Portugal e na Europa"

‘The press and the University share the motto “Say what is” - and for this reason, academic freedom is a constant ally of press freedom,’ said Peter Hanenberg, Vice-Rector of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa, in his opening speech at the book presentation 'Liberdade de Imprensa em Portugal e na Europa', which took place on 17 December at the Assembly of the Republic.

The book 'Liberdade de Imprensa em Portugal e na Europa', is published by UCP Editora on the initiative of Professor Paulo Pinto de Albuquerque, a former judge at the European Court of Human Rights.

The book, which was supported by Diário de Notícias and Grupo Bel, presents 23 Portuguese and 7 foreign cases submitted to the ECtHR. These are commented on in the book by 63 authors, journalists and jurists, and was organised by Paulo Pinto de Albuquerque, Valentina Marcelino, Deputy Director of DN and Bruno Contreiras Mateus, former Director of DN.

The President of the Assembly of the Republic, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, who closed the first panel presenting the book, said that press freedom ‘only exists when it is whole’ and concluded by emphasising: ‘As a society, we need to talk more and better about press freedom. I'm sure this book will help us to do so with more judgement.’

The event also included two debates: on PRESS FREEDOM AND JUSTICE and on FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION BY THE ECHR, in which the authors of the book took part.
