Between Embroidery and Corsets: Women and Madness at the End of the 19th Century

«During the 19th century, an affirmation of psychiatric science was developed in the scope of health, leveraged by social and political transformations that occurred in the transition from modernity to contemporaneity. In that time, women's role in society was largely confined by rules and social norms, perhaps even narrowed, and the truth is that the manifestation of women's illness, in particular mental illness, was also the target of very specific borders and delimitations. This presentation intends to introduce the reality of the Hospital de Alienados do Conde de Ferreira at the end of the 19th century, with special regard to the reality of the mad women who were admitted in the institution. The male dominance of power, as well as strict guidelines regarding the institutional functioning and treatments, drew the assistance provided in this Hospital, being this the mirror of what was being carried out in other health structures of that period.»
