Sala Brasil | UCP | Lisboa - Sede
The seventh session of the Reading Music cycle, the reading group of the Research Centre for Communication and Culture (CECC) on topics such as music and literature, presents a discussion of Edward Said's essay, “Memory, Solitude, and Affirmation” taken from Said’s Musical Elaborations (1991), an analysis of the cultural and social contexts of Western classical music and of the intersection of the public and private meaning of music.
As usual, the goal will be to discuss discuss selected readings illustrating particular methods of describing music as a way of unlocking meaning in an art that is often thought to be enigmatic (or reserved only for specialists).
Sara Eckerson, CECC member and Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Human Sciences will introduce the text and lead the discussion.
Participation does not require formal knowledge of music.
The readings will be made available before each session. To receive the materials, please send an email to: cecc@fch.lisboa.ucp.pt.
