On 20 May 2020, between 09h15 and 10h45, Professor Manuel Antunes da Cunha, from Faculdade de Filosofia e Ciências Sociais da Universidade Católica Portuguesa em Braga, will moderate an open class of Research Journalism on "The Minho Connection case". The session will be transmitted via zoom.

José Luís Manso Preto is the Director of O Minho Digital and author of Minho Connection (1992), a unique figure of research journalism in Portugal, recognized across borders and will be the guest of this open class.

Having started his career in O Comércio do Porto, José Luís Manso Preto has worked in titles such as O Primeiro de Janeiro, O Diabo, O Crime and O Expresso, having also collaborated in programs of SIC and Spanish channels. Born in Viana do Castelo, he became famous with an investigation carried out in the 80's to the drug cartels in Galicia that operated from Alto Minho.

Manso Preto's work was decisive for "Operation Nécora" which culminated in the arrest of the main members of the drug trafficking network and deserved a special broadcast on CNN, among other channels. In 2002, Manso Preto was also the first Portuguese journalist arrested for refusing to reveal his sources in a series of articles on the involvement of members of the Polícia Judiciária in drug trafficking. The case motivated a wave of support from hundreds of publications and international organizations.
