Meeting "Foreign Language Teaching at FCH"

Wednesday, November 18, 2020 - 17:30 - Wednesday, November 18, 2020 - 19:00

Sala 122 | FCH | UCP | Lisboa - Sede

How to teach a foreign language remotely? How can the digital be an effective complement to the face-to-face? What are the challenges of learning skills and communicative interaction in a virtual context? And how can these skills be fairly tested?

The pandemic that has accompanied us since March has led to a sudden change in ways of teaching and learning. From one moment to the next, students and teachers saw the need to adapt to distance learning. The need for greater digitalization in teaching had already been felt and there were also successful formats for distance learning. Circumstances only accelerated the process and radicalized the response.

For the teaching and learning of languages, this situation raised specific questions: How to effectively learn a language to use it in a plurality of communication contexts, if we see the latter reduced to distance communication? How to maintain the motivation and attention of those who learn a foreign language in a digital format? How to maintain a social space, important in learning a language, if only the virtual environment is available? How to plan a class with different tasks and formats? What materials are available and how can we use them effectively and not as fun or interlude?

From these questions, but also from the heritage of knowledge and experience of the teachers who teach several foreign languages every day on campus, FCH organizes a meeting and training, with the aim of sharing examples of good practices and concrete ideas and materials that can inspire other colleagues in their teaching practice, in person and at a distance.

Three colleagues who teach, respectively, English, German and Spanish will present three resources and examples of tasks and activities with these tools in the language classes they teach.

The session, which will take place on November 18 at 17h30, will be in a mixed format: face-to-face, in room 122, and distance by Zoom. The training is exclusive for FCH language teachers.
