Masterclass Leo Goldsmith

As part of the new Porto/Post/Doc Critics Lab, one of the critics invited to accompany and mentor the selected young critics, Leo Goldsmith, will give a lecture at the School of the Arts of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa.

In this open class, the American critic, who has written for international publications such as 4Columns, Film Comment, e-flux and The Brooklyn Rail, will discuss documentary as speculative fiction/science fiction, in other words, how documentary can narrate the future.

In particular, the critic will discuss the work of Peter Watkins and his "proto-staged" films (Punishment Park, The War Game) and how they use documentary techniques to anticipate future scenarios. At the same time, Leo Goldsmith will also analyse contemporary examples such as Riotsville USA, The Rehearsal and Mato Seco in Flames.
