João Louro · MATRIX and Dead end #19, 2020

The artist João Louro presents, on October 22nd, his works, conceived for Universidade Católica Portuguesa's headquarters. His new exhibition "MATRIX" and the work Dead end #19, 2020, curated by Nuno Crespo.

The inauguration of the work of art Dead end #19, 2020 will take place at 5:30 pm and will take place in the parking lot of the Faculties of Theology, Humans Sciences and Law. It will be displayed on the outside wall of the same building.
Later, at 5:50 pm, the associated exhibition, MATRIX, will be inaugurated at the Amélia de Mello Foundation Gallery.

"This exhibition is premised on the notion that the alphabet has been, from its inception, an infinite space of possibilities. Of latent meanings, not supplied at the outset, but which must be conquered through modes of conjugation and creation.  The ars combinatoria demanded by this alphabet is construed not as a principle of description or demonstration of concepts, images or shapes, but rather as a mode and place of creation.

The requirements of articulation, assembly and composition assert that, for this artist, whose work has often focused on our relationship with language, words, in themselves, do not indicate or express anything. He is primarily interested in exploring the moment in which the elements of the alphabet and the creative matrices of words find themselves in suspension, and there are no words, there are no meanings, there is no denotation, and words live in proximity to the voice, the body, to sensitivity.

The sculptural and objectual dimension conferred by João Louro on these matrices begins with the realization that the infinite space prefigured by the alphabet – in the sense that the human ability to invent words is, potentially, infinite – is a place of creation not only of concepts, but also of images, objects and shapes."
