Dynamics and functionality of core genes in multipartite genomes
Friday, February 28, 2025 - 14:00
Sala EBI023 | UCP | Centro Regional do Porto
The Faculty of Biotechnology is organising the Biotalk "Dynamics and functionality of essential genes in multipartite genomes" on 28 February at 14:00.
This talk will be attended by João Francisco Botelho.
INFORMATION
Bacterial genomes exhibit remarkable plasticity, with many species harboring both chromosomal and secondary replicons. While core genes - essential for bacterial survival - are traditionally thought to exist exclusively in either the chromosome or secondary replicons, our research has uncovered a fascinating phenomenon: the simultaneous presence of core genes in different replicons within the same genome. In this talk, I will present our research exploring the implications of this discovery through an integrative approach combining comparative genomics, phylogenetics, and computational biology. This work has potential implications for both fundamental bacterial genetics and applied fields such as antibiotic design and biotechnology applications, providing new perspectives on bacterial genome evolution and adaptation strategies.
