On March 26, 2026, School of Arts welcomes artist Diana Policarpo for a talk titled Toxic Blooms, centred on the project Ciguatera, an artistic investigation that departs from poisoning caused by marine microalgae to explore relationships between ecology, the body, and oceanic imagination. Inspired by fieldwork carried out in the Selvagens Islands in the North Atlantic, the project approaches ciguatera as a phenomenon that exceeds toxicology, revealing invisible networks that connect microscopic organisms, climate change, and maritime histories.

In this context, ciguatera also emerges as a way of thinking about processes of epistemological contamination, where science, myth, and colonial memory intertwine and produce unstable states of perception. Through film, sound, and sculpture, the installation Ciguatera proposes an immersive environment that invites the audience to imagine the ocean as a living, unstable space that generates narratives.

This talk is part of Art + Tech x Cosmos =, a programme that brings together artists, creative technologists, curators, writers, and thinkers whose contributions span several thematic constellations: from the spiritual and the mythical to sociotechnological infrastructures and (de)colonial logics, as well as speculative futures. The programme is curated by Joasia Krysa, Nuno Crespo, Daniel Ribas, and José Alberto Gomes.
