Thursday, October 16, 2025 - 18:30
Biblioteca, da Fundação de Serralves
“A Critical Look at Rankings” is the title of another session within the “Nourishing a Cause” Conversation Series, an initiative promoted by the Serralves Foundation, in scientific partnership with the Universidade Católica.
The event will feature Conceição Silva, lecturer at Católica Porto Business School, and will take place on 16 October, at 6:30 pm, in the Library of the Serralves Foundation.
Sinopse
This conversation will address the theme of rankings, both in the context of schools and from a broader and future-oriented perspective. It will explore new contexts and audiences, including rankings for happiness and well-being, corruption, and even the best city to grow old in!
In the educational context, the landmark moment was Coleman 1966, in the United States, when systematic comparisons were made for the first time between students attending different schools, giving rise to comparative analyses alongside the school effectiveness movement.
The utilitarian perspective of rankings will also be examined.
What are rankings for? Who are they aimed at, and what are the benefits of ranking schools?
Is the ranking model exhausted? What can still be done to improve it? And is the generalisation of rankings across all areas of the economy and society desirable?
