Commercial Law Conference 2026: Case Law of the Seção Especializada de Comércio do Tribunal da Relação do Porto

The Porto Faculty of Law of Universidade Católica Portuguesa will host, on 12 March, a session of the Commercial Law Conference (Jornadas de Direito Comercial), an initiative of the Porto Court of Appeal, in partnership with the Porto Faculty of Law of UCP, the Faculty of Law of the University of Porto, and the Portuguese Bar Association – Porto Regional Council. The initiative promotes a broad and plural debate on recent commercial case law.

This conference cycle takes place approximately three years after the establishment of the Specialized Commercial Section of the Porto Court of Appeal (Seção Especializada de Comércio do Tribunal da Relação do Porto), at a particularly timely moment to conduct a critical assessment of the case law produced to date. The activity of the courts is directed at the community they serve and acquires full meaning when it is discussed and shared, particularly among the professionals to whom it is addressed. The organization of the Conferences as events open to all interested parties, and the institutional partnerships established reflect a strong commitment to close cooperation with academia and the legal profession.

The Commercial Law Conference consists of four sessions, held between February and June 2026, culminating in the publication of a Conference Proceedings Book gathering the texts of the various presentations.

The conference model is based on the analysis of judgments (Acórdãos) of the Commercial Section of the Porto Court of Appeal, selected by the respective reporting judges - a total of eight appellate(desembargadores) judges - according to their practical relevance, innovative or controversial nature, and their impact on the business environment.

In addition to the session at Universidade Católica, the remaining public sessions will take place at the Salão Nobre do Palácio de Justiça do Porto (12 February), the Salão Nobre da Faculdade de Direito do Porto (30 April), and the Biblioteca da Ordem dos Advogados no Palácio da Justiça do Porto (18 June).
