Book Launch "A Rádio Colonial em Angola"

The Research Centre for Communication and Culture (CECC) and the Universidade Católica Editora organize the launch of the book A Rádio Colonial em Angola. Festas e Rifas para Comprar o Emissor, written by Professor Rogério Santos, on April 14 at 6 p.m.

The book is part of the BiPE (Broadcasting in the Portuguese Empire) project, funded by FCT and FEDER, and the presentation session will be attended by Professor Nelson Ribeiro, Dean of the Faculdade de Ciências Humanas (FCH), Professor Marissa J. Moorman, of Indiana University Bloomington and author of books on radio in Angola, Adolfo Maria, broadcaster and producer of the MPLA's program Angola Combatente, and Professor Ariana Cosme, university professor and daughter of broadcaster Leonel Costa.

From the back cover: "A Rádio Colonial em Angola. Festas e Rifas para Comprar o Emissor is a book about the radio heard and made in Angola during the colonial era, from the beginning of Emissora Nacional's shortwave broadcasts (1936) to the country's independence (1975). Over time, broadcasting followed various paths: programs sent from Lisbon, constitution of government radio in Luanda and of radio clubs, these composed of non-profit associations in the various cities of the colony, and, on the whole, organisations directed towards ideological choices to almost ignore the population of African origin, seen as a group to be educated or simply subversive. Here I have included programs in national languages, indicating political resistance, and listening to broadcasts, such as those produced by the liberation movements".
