Biotalk - AI-Powered Computational Biology

Friday, April 10, 2026 - 14:00 - Friday, April 10, 2026 - 15:00

Sala EC011 | UCP | Campus do Porto

In this session of Biotalk: "AI-Powered Computational Biology: Integrating Molecular Modelling, Evolutionary Genomics, and Machine Learning in Health and Environmental Biotechnology", to be held on April 10, starting at 2:00 pm, João Miguel Carneiro will be the guest speaker.

Biotalk

This talk explores how artificial intelligence and computational workflows are reshaping modern biology, from decoding microbial evolution to designing next-generation molecular tools for health and environmental applications. João Carneiro will present how evolutionary genomics, 3D molecular modelling, and machine learning can be integrated into unified pipelines capable of identifying pathogens in wastewater, designing AI-optimized aptamers for clinical biosensors, predicting plastic-degrading enzyme activity, and discovering bioactive compounds from marine microorganisms. Grounded in real funded projects and peer-reviewed results, the talk demonstrates that large-scale omics data, spanning genomes, metagenomes, transcriptomes, and proteins, can be computationally transformed into open-access, FAIR-compliant tools with direct impact in diagnostics and blue biotechnology.

10 April | 2:00 pm | Room EC011
