União das Misericórdias Portuguesas
The União das Misericórdias Portuguesas (UMP) was created in 1976 to guide, coordinate, dynamise and represent the Santas Casas de Misericórdia. The hospitals and continued care, which are at its genesis, are the most visible aspects of its work, whose objective is to respond, with quality, to the communities where they are located.
In the area of continued care, the Misericórdias are responsible for more than half of the total number of beds in the National Network of Integrated Continued Care, as well as being owners of hospitals that, under Decree-Law no. 138/2013, are integrated into the National Health Service.
Its health network also counts with complementary diagnostic and therapeutic means, primary care, pharmacies and mental health units. Additionally, the UMP and the Misericórdias have promoted reflection on the new health needs of the Portuguese, with particular focus on dementias and ageing.
It is in the light of this framework of experience and dedication to the community that União das Misericórdias Portuguesas, through its Health Units, collaborates with the Católica Medical School in clinical teaching, tutorials and curricular internships of students.
