Research Opportunities
You will find the list of all of UCP’s Research & Development Units which are responsible for the research opportunities, on our Research Units Page.
Within each Research Unit’s respective website you can find detailed information on the research opportunities that are currently available, along with all the direct contact information.
My research focuses on consumer behavior. More specifically, it aims to understand consumers and employees from a social and psychological perspective and advance knowledge that can improve those people’s lives. I have researched, for example, why having experiences (e.g., a music concert) advances more consumer happiness than does owning material objects (e.g., a new electronic gadget). My co-author, Merrie Brucks from the University of Arizona, and I found that experiences have greater conversational value than objects. That is, people are more likely to tell others about their experiences, and this social interaction that happens after the experience brings them happiness.
In collaboration with Sigal Barsade from Wharton, I am taking this happiness question to the employee’s realm by asking the question: Do employees whose jobs center on providing consumers with experiences (vs. objects) gain more happiness from those jobs? We find that they do, and that the explanation is that providing experiences to others feels more meaningful to the employee than providing objects.
These and other projects have benefited directly from resources made available to me by Católica Lisbon School of Business and Economics. The LERNE has given me access to reliable, replicable data. The research funds from FCT have enabled me to attend international conferences every year since joining the school, pay for research assistants, and for experiments I conduct online (on Amazon’s Mechanical Turk platform). Added to these tangible assets, the collegial and supportive environment at the school fosters a research mentality that translates into the high-quality work that our faculty has published across various top journals.”
Joining Católica has been a great experience. I particularly appreciate the supportive environment of the school. That made me starting the "Smart City Innovation Lab" at CLSBE really smooth and a big success.
Catolica has been, both for me and other international colleagues, a great environment for doing research, mainly due to a combination of factors: a friendly/collaborative/interdisciplinary environment (where it's quite easy not only to collaborate with people from the same area, but also to get quick and thoughtful feedback from people from other areas), the presence of strong (formal and informal) incentives to publish in top-tier journals and a generous research budget.
My contact with the Institute for Political Studies began in its inception. In truth, I was able to deepen my taste for philosophy and political theory, as well as receiving from its scholars the knowledge and the taste for research.
I would like to greet the determination, if not even the audacity, with which its administration and its multiple collaborators were able to rise and throughout several years, reinvent a unique space of political-philosophical reflection in Portugal. The contact that I established there with scholars from different theoretical-methodological approaches was essential for my decision to apply to a PhD Program in Cambridge, where today I’m offered the privilege to explore a vacation that I may say I have discovered while a student of the Institute for Political Studies. So, and for the solid work meanwhile completed with many other students, I express here all my recognition.
