Researchers from Universidade Católica Portuguesa among the world’s best

Eight researchers from the Universidade Católica Portuguesa (UCP) have been recognised among the best in the world, according to the 2025 edition of the World’s Best Scientists ranking, published by the international platform Research.com. The highlighted fields include Psychology, Microbiology, Biology and Biochemistry, Social Sciences, Environmental Sciences, and the Humanities, underlining the impact and relevance of their scientific contributions.

Six of the recognised researchers are affiliated with the Centre for Biotechnology and Fine Chemistry (CBQF), part of the Faculty of Biotechnology. In the field of Biology and Biochemistry, Manuela Pintado, Célia M. Manaia, and Tim Hogg were recognised. Researcher Paula Castro was acknowledged in two categories: Biology and Biochemistry, and Environmental Sciences. In Microbiology, researcher Paula Teixeira stood out, while in Plant Science and Agronomy, Marta W. Vasconcelos was recognised.

The researcher Arménio Rego, from the Research Centre in Management and Economics (CEGE) at Católica Porto Business School, was highlighted in the field of Social Sciences.

In the area of Psychology, Alexandre Castro-Caldas from the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Health (CIIS) at the Faculty of Health Sciences and Nursing was also recognised.

The ranking is based on the D-index (Discipline H-index), which measures scientific impact through the number of publications and citations exclusively within each research field. The data was updated up to November 2024, using sources such as OpenAlex and CrossRef. The purpose of the ranking is to highlight researchers whose work stands out for its significant contribution to the advancement of knowledge and for the social impact of their research.

This recognition reinforces the mission of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa to promote scientific excellence, consolidating its role within the academic landscape and in the production of knowledge,” emphasised Isabel Capeloa Gil, President of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa (UCP).
