International Studies Program brings together students from around the world

In an international landscape shaped by increasingly complex challenges, the study of International Law has never been more relevant. According to José Alberto Azeredo Lopes, coordinator of the International Studies Program (ISP) at the Porto Faculty of Law of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa, international crises, armed conflicts and growing tensions within the multilateral system highlight the need for highly qualified professionals in this field. “More than ever, we need outstanding lawyers and international affairs specialists,” he says, stressing the importance of a solid education that equips graduates with the technical expertise, critical thinking and adaptability required to operate across a wide range of institutional and professional contexts.

The programme’s international character is reflected in the diversity of its student body. Sabahat Rahim Baig, a first-year student from Pakistan, chose the ISP because of the academic reputation of Universidade Católica Portuguesa and the multicultural environment she found at the Porto Faculty of Law. She hopes to build a career in International Law, Human Rights and diplomacy. First-year student Naman Tariq also highlights the opportunity to deepen his knowledge of European Law while applying theoretical concepts to practical cases, an experience that has strengthened his analytical skills and helped shape his academic and professional goals.

For David Kagan, the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the complex field of International Law was a decisive factor in choosing the programme. He emphasises its interdisciplinary approach, which brings together the legal, political, economic and social dimensions of international affairs, providing a comprehensive understanding of the contemporary challenges facing global governance and international relations. Margarida Rodrigues de Magalhães likewise highlights the impact of the programme on her personal and professional development, praising the close relationship with faculty members and the opportunity to study alongside colleagues from different countries and cultures, an experience that enriches learning and fosters the intercultural skills essential for an international career.

Among the programme’s alumni, Marta Pereira Cachide recalls the diverse curriculum, participation in the ISP Dialogues, and interaction with academics and experts from different countries as some of the most memorable aspects of her experience. She also highlights the truly international environment, which broadened her perspective, strengthened her intercultural competences and provided a solid foundation for meeting the challenges of an increasingly interconnected world.
