Poetry as an echological survival is an exhibition-as-methodology by artist and researcher Nuno da Luz. An eco-sensible approach to our immediate surroundings that transposes atmospheric and environmental phenomena into waves and vibrations to be felt at human scale. By paying close attention to the echoes of the biotic, the geodic and the elemental, it invites visitors to resonate sympathetically with the world in flux. For the Portuguese Pavillion at Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai, lighting is modulated by real-time tide height in the Osaka Bay, and two wind gongs vibrate according to previously recorded wave height data, accompanied by recordings of the ocean surf at Yamada Beach, Naraha, Fukushima. Collected by Nuno da Luz in 2018 during a field research trip, these recordings alongside panoramic shots of the area—filmed by Brazilian filmmaker Ana Vaz—are shown here for the first time.
