In an auditorium filled with colleagues, former students, family members and friends, José Matias Alves formally concluded his teaching career at the Faculty of Education and Psychology of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa (FEP-UCP), in Porto, on 3 November 2025.

The occasion was marked by his “Final Lecture”, under the theme “The relentless pursuit of brighter days”, a deeply emotional moment that celebrated a life devoted to education, reflection, and a commitment to the development of individuals.

The ceremony began at 5:30 p.m. with an address by Raquel Matos, Director of the Faculty of Education and Psychology. In her speech, she highlighted Matias Alves’ invaluable contribution to educational thought in Portugal and to the growth of the Faculty itself, emphasising how he consistently combined academic rigour with human sensitivity, inspiring generations of students and colleagues.

A lesson on hope, education and the future

The “Final Lecture” followed, in which José Matias Alves shared his reflections on the importance of continuing to seek “brighter days”, a phrase that set the tone for the session. His words, imbued with hope and an awareness of time lived, were received with attentiveness and emotion by all those present.

The session concluded with remarks by Rui Trindade, Professor at the Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences of the University of Porto (FPCEUP), who paid tribute to the legacy of José Matias Alves.
