Católica and Gulbenkian Institute for Advanced Studies establish partnership to share bibliographic resources
The Universidade Católica Portuguesa and the Gulbenkian Institute for Advanced Studies (IGEA) have signed a memorandum allowing fellows from this institute to use the João Paulo II University Library, at the Universidade Católica's headquarters in Lisbon, and access its collections. At the same time, the IGEA will donate works recommended by its fellows to the Library, which will become part of its collection.
As a leading library in Lisbon, the João Paulo II University Library is thus opening its doors to international fellows, researchers and academics who collaborate with the Gulbenkian Institute for Advanced Studies.
"The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, with its new Institute for Advanced Studies, will bring to Portugal and to the institute people with excellent projects who will contribute to the development of knowledge in a new way, in line with the other activities that the Foundation has been engaged in for a long time – supporting knowledge and the development of science in Portugal and around the world. The Institute brings the people, we have the books. It is a happy meeting between the two sides because libraries without people are nothing and people without books do not grow," said the Vice-Rector of Católica, Peter Hanenberg, at the partnership signing ceremony.
Miguel Tamen, director of IGEA, highlighted the need for researchers to have access to bibliographic resources. "We anticipate that the people who will come to us are very accustomed to working in libraries, that they cannot live without libraries. What we did was look at the best libraries in the Lisbon area and propose a combination to them, which, in this case, was accepted," he explained.
Recently launched by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, the Gulbenkian Institute for Advanced Studies aims to enable internationally renowned academics to conduct free research for periods of three to nine months in a stimulating intellectual environment.
