The main mission of the Centre for Biotechnology and Fine Chemistry is to contribute towards a sustainable Bioeconomy. CBQF was established in 1990 with the mission to steadily develop and disseminate to the economic and social arena knowledge and innovation in pivotal areas - Food and Nutrition Environment and Health with key impacts on human health well-being and the economy.

CBQF was recognized as Associate Laboratory in Food and Environment in 2004 with accreditation until 2020. Since its origin it had two transdisciplinary and translational research lines of intervention in the agrofood and environmental sectors - "Agrofood: safer healthier more nutritious and more competitive" and "Environmental: Innovative approaches to promote sustainability". Currently CBQF comprises three research groups: Environment and Resources; Food and Nutrition; Biobased and Biomedical Products; combining ten Thematic Research laboratories. The research infrastructure equipped with cutting-edge technologies is organized in seven PLATFORMS: Analytical Chemistry; Tissue Culture; Molecular Biology; Packaging & Materials; Consumer & Sensory Science; Bioactives; Structural Analysis and Technology Hall and a Kitchen Lab all coordinated by highly qualified technicians.

CBQF integrates a total of 63 PhD researchers and hosts 47 PhD students and 23 research assistants. In 2013-2017 CBQF published 550+ international peer reviewed (IPR) papers (ca. 60% in Q1 and 80% in Q1+Q2 journals) 73% of these were in collaboration either with Portuguese research centers or with international partners from 45 countries. CBQF proved a high capacity to attract competitive funding participating in 130+ projects. Of note is a high impact strategic Alchemy project recently approved for the next 5 years with the top international Biotech Company AMYRIS.
