“Reframing monuments”: a conversation about memory, history, and public space

What does it mean to “reframe” a monument — and why does it matter today?

In the twenty-fifth episode of the Transform4Europe podcast, host Triin Männik speaks with artist, curator and Dean of Fine Arts at the Estonian Academy or Arts, Kirke Kangro, and historian and curator, and Vice Rector for Research at the same university, Linda Kaljundi, about their joint research project, “How to Reframe Monuments”.

The conversation explores how societies can engage with complex and contested heritage, focusing on monuments that have become sites of public debate in Estonia, and beyond. Rather than simply preserving or removing them, this project asks how monuments could be reinterpreted through artistic and interdisciplinary approaches.

This “Reach Out” episode places Estonia’s experience in a wider European, and global, context, opening up broader questions about memory, history, and public space.
