Oliva Art Center: works by Jaime Fernandes preserved and studied by CCR and CITAR
The Conservation and Restoration Center and CITAR collaborated in the conservation and study of a set of drawings by Jaime Fernandes that will be part of the exhibition Jaime: “I saw a dog of mine with wolves", which opens on October 9th, at the Oliva Art Center, S. João da Madeira.
Jaime Fernandes (1899-1969) is unequivocally one of the most recognized authors in the history of European brute art. In Portugal, his work achieved cult esteem, but he continues to be known mainly through the film Jaime (1974) by António Reis (1931-1991) and Margarida Cordeiro (1938) and not so much through the direct contact with drawings, which few have seen.
This exhibition brings together more than forty drawings by Jaime from various private collections in Portugal, France, Switzerland and Austria and from national and international institutions, such as the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the Collection de l’Art Brut de Lausanne. Presented together, these drawings offer us a new possibility of reading and relating to a work that still surprises and captivates us today, and which has been far from the public for the last forty years.
