Note of Condolence: Julião Sarmento (1948-2021)

It is with deep regret that the School of Arts of the Catholic University of Portugal receives the news of the death, at the age of 72, of the artist Julião Sarmento, one of the fundamental artists of Portuguese contemporary art. In Julião Sarmento's work, the desire for discovery and the tension of the subject's relationship with the world were latent, often reflecting on the nature of pleasure, knowledge and artistic creation. For this reason, his work - in painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, film and video, among others - will be a lasting inspiration.

This news is particularly sad for the School of Arts given the friendship that existed with the artist. Julião Sarmento was a member of the School of Arts Advisory Board, having presented the exhibition Filmworks in July 2019, in our Exhibition Room. We will remember with longing the great availability, commitment and generosity with which Julião Sarmento shared his experience and knowledge with us.

We present our condolences to the family and close friends.

"O mais novo de todos os artistas"

Julião was always one of the most restless, the most curious and the truest. It wasn't about a programme or a strategy, it was his position in the world: insatiable, driven by an enormous curiosity and owner of the greatest and best youth of all.
