New T4EU podcast episode explores artistic research as a method and everyday practice

The latest episode of the Transform4Europe (T4EU) podcast, Reach Out, entitled “Artistic Research as a Method”, offers a reflection on the role of artistic research as both a tool and a method of creation, raising a central question: how does artistic research take shape in the everyday practices of artists?

Throughout the episode, guests Ingel Vaikla, a visual artist and filmmaker, and Karl Joonas Alamaa, an artist and designer, share insights into their approaches to artistic research, shaped by themes such as memory, home, the body and care. The conversation is moderated by Karolin Poska, a doctoral student at the Estonian Academy of Arts.

One of the key themes addressed in the episode is how artistic research moves across different media and experiences, from translating architecture into film to using bread as a symbol of survival and resistance. The discussion highlights how these practices reflect processes of experimentation and interpretation that go beyond traditional research methods.

In this context, the episode also explores the everyday dimension of artistic research, emphasising the role of doubt, displacement, and the merging of personal life and creative practice. The speakers underline that this form of research is developed both through reflection and daily routines, revealing itself as a continuous and evolving process.

Recorded in front of a live audience at the Estonian Academy of Arts in February 2026, the episode offers an engaging and dynamic perspective on these practices, fostering direct dialogue with the audience.

By offering this reflection, the episode invites listeners to rethink artistic research not only as an academic field, but as a hybrid space where creation, experience and critical thinking intersect, contributing to new forms of knowledge and contemporary expression.
